Now is the Time to Start Improving your Lawn

August 18, 2010 by Frazee Gardens

This has been a challenging summer for lawns. Extreme heat and humidity has led to rampant disease problems and huge outbreaks of crabgrass and nutsedge. It is very important to make improvements to your lawn in the fall if you want to enjoy a nice lawn next year. Now is the time to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. Fall is also the best time to fertilize your lawn & control weeds. Depending on the condition of your lawn, you have some options to improve your lawn:

If the lawn is in fairly good shape but thin and with a fair population of weeds, you can improve the lawn dramatically by applying 1 lb N/1000 sq ft in September and 1 lb N/1000 sq ft in November. An application of a broadleaf herbicide in mid-October should take care of most of the broadleaf weeds like clover and dandelion.

If your lawn is very thin and weedy you will want to do some seeding. You can aerate the lawn (best to go over several times in different directions) and overseed with a grass type that will match your
existing grass. In more extreme cases you can slice seed (best to go half rate in 2 different directions). In both instances it is important to mow the lawn short and keep it short while the new grass is germinating. Apply starter fertilizer at the time of seeding and winterizer fertilizer in late fall. Be sure to keep seed wet until germination and then gradually cut back on watering.
