Plant A Million Project

September 28, 2009 by Frazee Gardens

Plant A Million

This project was started to educate the public about the importance of trees to our environment and initiate the collective planting of one million trees in central Indiana. Many wooded areas have been depleted due to new developments being built in our state, but trees also die from disease, pests, and storm damage. Trees do so much for our planet that you might not even realize. Go to plantamillion.org to read all the reasons why you should plant a tree. Frazee Gardens wanted to take a stand for this cause by planting the first tree of a million more to come and by taking part in this project, you too can help improve the environment literally in your own backyard.

Our Tropicals have started to Arrive!

Salmon Colored Hibiscus Beautiful Salmon Colored Hibiscus

We’ve just unloaded two trucks of tropicals into our greenhouse and the color is exploding. Topicals such as Gardenias and Hibiscus are in high demand for their beautiful smell and colorful flowers. But what do you need to do to be sure they survive? The simplest option is to treat these plants like annuals. Enjoy them all season long and when they start to look gloomy in the fall, say goodbye and look forward to a whole new collection the next year. If, however, you are determined to keep them for more than a season, you need to remember a few key facts.

Somewhere in the world, these plants are native. The best way to ensure their survival is to try and mimic their natural conditions. For most, this is humid, bright and warm. Watch to make sure your home’s humidity levels don’t plummet if it gets too warm. A good way to create a small area of high humidity is to place water around where the plants will be. This can come in the form of a fountain, or placing a plate of rocks and water under the plants (careful that the bottom of the pot and water don’t meet). The last thing they need is a bright window, though they should not be placed into direct sunlight, or you may experience leaf burn. All these tips may greatly help your ability to over winter a tropical, but in the end it depends on the plant. Most of the time, there is no window bright enough in Indiana to keep a gardenia thriving through our murky winters

Oh No! Snow!

Snow Damage to Early Bulb Flowers Snow Damage to Early Bulb Flowers

For those of us who wished Spring would come so much, we started planting up our flower beds already, we’re in for a big frost of reality. Tonight the low is predicted to be about 28 degrees. Flowering trees have to make it on their own, but everything else in your yard should be protected. Any containers that are sitting out on your porch or patio need to be brought into the house immediately. New annuals planted or bulbs popping out of the soil should be covered. We sell a frost blanket specifically for this purpose, but any old blanket or sheet will do. If plastic is used, especially clear, it must be removed before the sun comes out tomorrow or there may be a risk of burning the plants you just covered to save. Remember, there is a big difference to a plant between 28 degrees and 21. If the temperature starts to drop even more than expected, a simple sheet won’t do. Keep adding on the layers as it gets colder. At worst, if the temperature hits the teens, and plants are not protected, frost damage may be visible for 2 to 3 years as we saw a lot of in ‘07. So get out there and protect those flowers!
